Working your abs upright seems to have quite a lot of benefits.
First of all, you're not working just your abs, but actually engaging more of your core muscles in the process.
Engaging more muscles is also a lot more effective than trying to isolate different groups (as in the case of crunches). Standing ab workouts can add a new dimension to your fitness routine, giving you not just strong abs, but also a strong core.
In many ways, upright abs exercises at home are very similar to standing crunches but without putting pressure on your spine.
